Abstract
  • Blackside dace, Rhinichthys osculus nubilus (GIRARD), were collected from ten western Oregon streams and examined for variation among morphological and meristic characters. Several characters were observed to vary between populations studied. Number of vertebrae, number of scales in and above the lateral line, length of snout, and depth of body differed between coastal and Willamette Valley drainage populations. Specimens from Willamette Valley streams had the highest fin ray and maxillary barbel counts. Vertebrae and scale count differences were the best defined, and on the basis of these two characters, coastal populations of blackside dace in Oregon probably deserve subspecific recognition.
