Abstract
  • Caissons are frequently used in the coastal environment for breakwaters, jetties, seawalls, and piers. Because a satisfactory analytical solution to a typical caisson installation has not been developed, design of a caisson-style structure typically is either based on physical model testing, which is expensive, or the structure is designed as a seawall, which fails to account for dissipation and transmission of wave energy. This paper presents a first-order solution to the pressure and flow fields surrounding a caisson-style breakwater on a rubble foundation. The problem is divided into seven distinct regions and the boundary value problem solved by matched eigenvalue expansion. Orthogonalizing across the vertical interfacial boundaries yields a set of equations in which the unknown surface wave amplitudes can be solved by matrix inversion. Dispersion equations are developed for each region. A quadratic damping law is presented, which is linearized by Lorentz's condition of equivalent work. A computer program was developed to solve the boundary value problem. Instabilities in the dispersion equation for some of the regions limited solutions to the problem to the first eigenmode. Using the first mode solution, effects of varying parameters in the problem are presented and discussed. Results from the numerical model are compared to data collected during two series of large-scale wave tank tests, and are shown to be in good agreement.
