Abstract
  • The first part of this work presents an executive system for steady state process systems analysis. The executive is developed to promote maximum flexibility, generality and a high degree of man-machine interaction by allowing the user to write a Fortran main calling program which permits special logic and control to be introduced to suit the needs of a particular simulation problem. Development of the calling program is assisted by topological ordering algorithms and extensive executive subprograms for efficient convergence of complex recycle net calculations. As the second part of this work, an asymptotic convergence technique is developed and compared with other convergence techniques commonly used in process calculations. The algorithms are compared by evaluating nine systems for each convergence algorithm. The criteria chosen for the comparison include the number of system evaluations, storage requirement and stability of the iteration process. The systems used in the comparison study include both linear and nonlinear systems, each being further characterized as a weakly or strongly interacting system. Based on the results from this comparison, the asymptotic convergence technique developed in this work has proven to be more reliable than other algorithms studied and most always results in reduced computation time due to improved convergence properties.
