Abstract
  • Many applications in computer graphics and geometry processing rely on the ability to locally orient 2D and 3D entities on a surface, or inside a volume, such as the sinusoidal kernels in Gabor noise, the color and geometry textures in pattern synthesis, and the finite elements in remeshing. In these applications, it is often desirable to have the orientations of objects near each other in the domain be similar; that is, it is optimal that the orientations vary smoothly. In this thesis, we present systems for the design, analysis and visualization of orientation fields on surfaces and in volumes. The fields in our systems are represented by tensor fields. At the core of our system is the ability to specify and control the number, location, shape, and connectivity of the field topology or degenerate features. To enable such capability we have made a number of observations about tensor field topology that were previously unreported. We demonstrate the power of our design with applications in texture synthesis, remeshing, and non-photorealistic rendering. In addition, we propose ways to use tensor fields for the purpose of analyzing existing vector field data, applying our system to the scientific visualization of flow and earthquake data.
