Abstract
  • The characters in each of these pieces exist outside the periphery of the so-called norm. In "Through Parted Curtains," "What They Do Besides Eat," and "Two Lambs," June wishes to enter the adult world that tends to exclude her (though she will only enter conditionally). June is, of course, about to enter that world we all face at some point in our lives. To get there, though, she must pass through a series of rites of passage that suggest a sense of southern peculiarity and ritual--from tomboy to outward femininity, from Daddy's girl to a frightening awareness of the potentials of sex, from an innocent member of her community to that of a girl who, like her pal Randy Kibler, keeps Prosperity from becoming too pure. In "It'll Do You Some Good," Mrs. Halfacre must sit a little closer to that line that marks the periphery. Her curiosity, her marital obligations and her duty to community make that border quite complex. While completely unrelated to any of the stories from Prosperity, the first chapter of Unplanted ties in to this project through similar notions of the periphery. Mattie's transient lifestyle and her horrifying past keep her from ever being able to enter the world she longs to be a part of.
