Abstract
  • The relationship between the public and new technologies has historically been a tumultuous one, with public perceptions ranging from excited rapid adoption to standoffish pessimism. In 2011, IBM tried to use competition as a means of showcasing a new technology to the public. This thesis is a work of rhetorical criticism. It applies Lloyd Bitzer’s rhetorical situation to the Jeopardy! match that featured two of the game’s top contestants competing against Watson, an artificial intelligence project developed by IBM. The question that is the focus of this thesis is: how fitting was IBM’s Watson as a rhetorical response to the exigence of public concerns about artificial intelligence. The analysis that follows demonstrates the importance of the popular media in creating support for new technology.
