Abstract
  • During the 1981 grazing season four sets offecal coliform (FC) concentration data were collected from streams on sheep grazed clear cut units on the Alsea Ranger District of the Siuslaw National Forest. The objective of the study was to access bacterial water quality impacts from sheep grazing. Sample sites were located above and below grazing influence on unit streams. Samples were collected at all sample sites three times before grazing, each day of grazing, three consecutive days following grazing, and two additional days over the following ten day period. Water temperature and stream discharge were measured as each sample was collected. Statistical analysis of the data revealed slight or no impact on the bacterial water quality from sheep grazing. The short term nature of grazing on any given unit is probably a factor in these results. During the late summer, study units appear to be more vulnerable to bacterial impact than earl ier study units. Error in stream discharge measurements and the limited range of water temperature data preclude their usefulness in analyzing FC concentration variability. Recommendations are made to increase the number of pregraze samples and reduce the number of postgraze samples in future studies. Further recommendations include limiting study units to those with secure control sample points and at least two full days of grazing, and for fall storm event sampling on study units.
