Abstract
  • The micropolar equations of motion are developed, in a very general form, for a mixture of fluid and solid particles. The fluid is allowed to move differently than the solids, and the solids are modeled as a micropolar continuum. That is, the solid particles have an additional degree of freedom of spin that is independent of the macro-motion and the effects of this spin appear in the equations of motion. Very general equations are developed and then simplifying assumptions are stated as needed to allow the resulting equations to be solved analytically. This process is carried out until the system of equations is completely linear and an analytical solution can be found for the application under investigation. The application considered in this paper is the effect of an earthquake on underwater seabeds. This applications is plane strain and the motion is two dimensional in a vertical plane. The solution of the equations that include micropolar effects is compared with the solution of the equations with the micropolar terms removed. For most conditions, the influence of the micropolar effects are small. However, there are physically realistic values of the material coefficients for which the response is dominated by micropolar effects.
