  • Evaluation of the safety hazards along a highway is usually performed at specific locations and on known hazards. But, it is also important to find any unrecognized hazards and their locations. Many factors contribute to accident potential, and the combined effect of several of them could produce a hazard that is not apparent when evaluating each factor separately. To overcome this, a procedure for developing a combined accident potential profile is presented: This is done for 5, 000 feet of the road at one time. The accident factors included are speed differentials between cars and trucks, rail crossings, geometric characteristics, and roadside hazards. Each is discussed separately, and their effect combined with the other three for the final accident potential profile. A computerized model is developed and utilized to cut down the computation time and mistakes. Graphical plots are generated by the computer to give avisual aid in the evaluation process. The plots are discussed to determine the true meaning behind the profiles developed from an example problem.
