Abstract
  • This study discusses common struggles of first-generation Polynesian football players’ university experiences with cultural adaptation. There is little research on this topic. Because of the importance of these issues and the exploratory nature of this study, a qualitative approach was needed. Interviews were conducted with 15 first-generation Polynesian football male athletes. Themes were developed from the responses of the participants using Yoshikawa’s four stages of cultural adaptation. Additional themes materialized as these first-generation Polynesian football players shared their personal stories and experiences of cultural adaptation to U.S. society. The results of the research findings show common challenges these players experience in the United States. The common challenges and experiences of these participants provide some practical recommendations to better help future first-generation Polynesian football players with cultural adaptation.
