Abstract or Summary
  • An analysis of the economics of multiple use forest planning is presented. At the forest level itself it is demonstrated the use of duality information provided by linear programming to price nonmarket commodities allocations and to establish an accounting system in multiple use forest management. The use of post-optimal activity analysis to address policy issues at the forest level is illustrated. The linkage between stand-level and forest-level analyses is established within the context of multiple use forestry economics. Through Kuhn-Tucker theory, the Faustmann-Samuelson solution to land and forest valuation is generalized to account for timber and non-timber commodities. Finally, current problems in the practice of multiple use forest planning are described and analyzed. The need for a managerial decentralization of the planning problem is demonstrated within the context of recent developments in the theory of economic planning and management. A design for a strategic resource allocation model is presented. The model permits explicit incorporation of economic welfare concepts and establishes the linkage between forest-level and regional-level planning.
