  • Home Afterwhile, a collection of eight short stories and an essay, explores issues of family and maturation from the landscapes of the Midwest. Generations are connected through a sense of place—from small cornfield towns to Chicago and its suburbs—as well as through what gets retold and what goes unspoken. Characters grapple with loss, guilt, and the struggle to find ‘home.’ Sometimes that means ‘home’ in the literal sense of place. Sometimes it is ‘home’ in the sense of people they feel safe with. Sometimes it is a ‘home’ they’ll never reach—one that existed before external events complicated their lives. Though these characters rarely find clear answers, they do manage tentative steps forward, without forgetting the past they have come from.
