Abstract
  • Computer codes for versions of STORM, capable of calculating power distributions in a three-dimensional quarter-core of a boiling water reactor, were developed by using both a modified one-group and two-group diffusion theory model with several different power calculation schemes. Several numerical examples that demonstrate the high efficiency of the coarse-mesh method for the solution of power distributions in a two-dimensional quarter-core of a boiling water reactor lead to the following conclusions: (1) Borresen's coarse-mesh node averaging scheme with correction factors improved the accuracy of predicting the power distributions; (2) The modified Borresen's scheme, which uses an analytical procedure, shows improved accuracy in power calculations when compared to Borresen's method; and (3) Both the face dependent flux discontinuity factor method and the average flux discontinuity factor method, which use the flux discontinuity across node boundaries, provide far better accuracy in power calculations than the two methods listed above. Although two-group diffusion theory model calculations, with the exception of the average discontinuity factor method, require approximately 2.3 times the computing time for modified one-group diffusion theory calculations, the former yields more accurate results than the latter at relatively modest computing costs. The most attractive method of those considered in this study appears to be the two-group approximated average discontinuity factor method, for which the computing time is comparable to the modified one-group methods and the success of which is dependent upon the accuracy of the discontinuity factors used.
