  • The minimal kernel for a network data base management system is developed. It includes format specification for the object schema and the data base file, and routines for performing the basic network functions. The object schema defines the relationship between the schema, records, sets, and fields. It informs the system how records are to be stored, found, and erased. The data base file not only contains the data base, it also contains the structures supporting accessing and storing of data. Block 0 contains information on the paths to all the other records in the system. Block 1 contains a free list array used by the system for managing file space. All the other blocks in the file are used for storing data base records or hash structures. Each record has one pointer pointing to it. While the position of the pointer is fixed, the record it is pointing to is not. This provides flexibility and eliminates problems associated with pinned records. The routines for performing data base functions include FIND, GET, CONNECT, DISCONNECT, STORE, ERASE, OPEN, and CLOSE. Since hashing is heavily used in traditional network data base systems, this thesis focused a great deal of attention on the development of the hashing function to be used by the system. An extendible hashing function is used.
