Abstract
  • Contrasting the productive ground gained in ecological rhetorical theory through embedded fieldwork, composition as a discipline has yet to enact such transformative engagements with ecology. In this thesis, I put forward a praxis for ecological rhetoric and composition through permaculture design, utilizing the design framework’s system of ethics and principles to develop a holistic and contextually-derived approach to compositional pedagogy. In practicing permaculture as such, the composition classroom becomes a place for writers to simultaneously develop capacities to engage rhetorical and biophysical ecologies as rhetorical ecologists. As the boundaries between place and text are rendered porous, practitioners of this methodology cultivate the ecological phronesis necessary for addressing the emergent wicked environmental problems that constitute our impending and pervasive ecological crises.
