Abstract
  • The focus of this research is to develop a personal computer based simulation model of the mechanized logging process, from felling until the log arrives at the sawmill. The SLAM II simulation language is used for modeling, and the main emphasis is on the overall performance of this system, and the interaction between the individual components. The main approach will be, to break the logging process down into its components. Each component can then be analyzed and modeled to form a modular system. By giving the components/modules of a specific operation, these modules will then be arranged in the desired order by the simulation processor. Thus, the variations of a system can be explored and evaluated in their performance for different machine configurations. The possible machine configurations for a particular environment can be tested and compared. A front-end interface for simulation inputs and outputs is developed. The input interface facilitates the user in entering input parameters to the model without the need to learn the simulation language. The output interface produces easy to understand and readable outputs.
