Abstract
  • This study addresses perceptions, expectations, and values of women who espoused interest in joining National Panhellenic Conference sorority organizations, and the congruence of their beliefs with their first term membership experiences. The sources that informed women's expectations were also explored. Eight participants were selected from the potential new member pool and were interviewed using qualitative phenomenological research methods. Categories including expectations and perceptions, influences, and values congruence which mirror the research questions are discussed in the study findings along with sub-categories and themes which support them. Implications for practice include women's focus on belongingness, suggestions for improving recruitment rules and structure, and continued focus on values congruence.
