Abstract
  • There is a fundamental distortion in our understanding of Native people, especially Native women. This distortion is rooted in imperialism and the colonization of Native lands and has created a dominant/subordinate relationship between Non-Native/Native people. Anthropological life history research has traditionally reflected this relationship. As a Native woman, the author seeks to decolonize this research method by transforming how Native women's lives are presented in life history work. The author seeks to create a space where her mother, a Kootenai Indian, can share her knowledge and the stories of her life in her own voice. The life history covers the woman's earliest memories though her service in the U.S Army, and her life as a young mother at the age of twenty two.
