Abstract
  • This thesis covers the facing problem of maternity rights for professional female athletes. By examining the consciousness raising strategies of two professional track athletes, the critical consciousness theory was used to understand the importance of anti-oppressive thinking and anti-oppressive action. Major findings have shown that consciousness raising is a practical tool used to raise awareness on the lack of maternity rights in sport contracts. My conclusions have shown that consciousness raising that includes rhetoric on anti-oppressive thinking and anti-oppressive action can encourage sport companies to change their contracts which support maternity leave for their female athletes.
