Abstract
  • Metamix is a mixture of botanical compounds that promote healing and prevent infection for burns and diabetic ulcers. In this thesis, metamix was incorporated into 1.75 weight percent gellan gum hydrogels as a drug delivery method for burned skin. The ideal concentration of metamix was 25% by solution volume for the hydrogel burn patches, and the mechanical properties of the metamix-infused hydrogels were analyzed using rheometry. Various storage methods were tested in order to determine the conditions that prevent mold growth and syneresis to promote hydrogel longevity. Characterization of the liquid syneresing from the metamix-infused hydrogels was examined by measuring the contact angle of the fluid on a smooth silicon wafer surface. The diffusion of liquid through the hydrogel was analyzed over time using surgical sponges to model the skin. This study follows the optimization of the development, storage, and characterization of metamix-infused gellan gum hydrogels.
