Abstract
  • The goal of this project is to better characterize particle movement in a multi-channel fluidized bed. Fluidized beds are commonly used for heat transfer with the rapid fluidization and homogeneous heat distribution. By characterizing this particle flow, it would allow for an improved understanding of the heat transfer mechanisms within this fluidized bed reactor. This thesis focuses on development of an upper moving bed which then feeds into a fluidized bed. With the inclusion of the upper moving bed, it allows for additional solid to air contacting after the fluidized bed for heat recuperation. The upper moving bed design allows a continuous addition of solid particles into the fluidized bed, creating a steady-state process. This study has managed to characterize the particle flow through the horizontal orifice of the upper moving bed with counter-current airflow through the exit orifice. This showed a reduction in the flowrate of particles and was unable to resolve the particle arching that occurred within the fluidized bed. A motor was added to the upper moving bed design which allowed for an improved particle flow of the upper moving bed at lower orifice heights. Residence time studies were also conducted on the fluidized bed with an image processing technique to analyze the concentration of the outlet particles which determined the mean residence times and for 3mm alumina beads for mass flow ratios of solid/gas of 0.084 – 0.15
