Abstract
  • Sunscreen products are used worldwide to protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation. However, some of the ingredients used in sunscreen products are fatal to coral reefs especially in areas where tourism is a large part of the economy. In this study, we explored a synthetic route to produce 4-deoxygadusol, which is a core unit of mycosporine-like Amino Acid (MAAs). MAAs are found in bacteria, fungi, algae and marine invertebrates. It has been proposed that MAAs fulfill functions such as sunscreen, antioxidant and stress response. MAAs work by a mechanism which absorbs UV radiation and converts it into heat without the formation of free oxygen species and without posing a threat to coral reefs. Two competing synthetic schemes to 4-deoxygadusol were explored, and three out of the proposed eight to nine synthetic steps have been accomplished. The products were verified using NMR and mass spectrometry.
