Abstract
  • This research examined the potential for using peanut husk as a fiber alternative to wood in the production of melamine-formaldehyde (MF) particleboard. MF resin was used to produce panels with one, three, six, nine or 12 percent resin contents. Modulus of Rupture (MOR), Modulus of Elasticity (MOE), Internal Bond (IB) and Thickness Swelling (TS) were tested. MOR, MOE and IB values of panels containing 6 percent or more resin met or exceeded ANSI standards for multiple grades of particleboard. TS ranged from 58.9 percent at one percent resin to 7.9 percent at 12 percent resin. The results suggest that peanut husks could be used as an alternative fiber source for particleboard although concerns were expressed about the potential impacts of use on those with peanut allergies.
