Abstract
  • Accurate estimation of the amount of water used by trees is important for a variety of agricultural applications. There are several current methodologies for measuring sap flow and water use in trees, however the heat ratio method has been identified as the ideal due to its ability to measure low and reverse flow rates. Here, an open-source sap flux measurement probe designed at Oregon State University’s Openly Published Environmental Sensing Lab (OPEnS) using the heat ratio method was used to collect data. That data was then analyzed using a Monte-Carlo analysis to determine how error in the heat ratio of the probe propagates into error of the final water use estimate for the tree. With the heat ratio methodology, it is expected that farmers and researchers are enabled to make better informed decisions about water and crops with minimal error in final measurements.
