Abstract
  • Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive public health issue that continues to affect women globally. GBV is estimated to impact 37% of Botswanan women, exceeding the average global prevalence of 30%. This investigation takes place within the Botswana Global Health Initiative, a collaboration led by OSU researchers, the community of Maunatlala and the government of Botswana to promote community health and well-being. This Initiative employs a form of Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) known as the Sustainable Community Partnership and Empowerment (SCoPE) strategy which focuses on the creation of long-term health solutions that are locally meaningful and community-driven. In 2022, the community of Maunatlala identified GBV prevention as a key priority. This investigation outlines the process of determining how the community understands and relates to GBV in the summer of 2022. Interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with key community partners, then qualitative data analysis was performed. Four key themes were identified (determinants of GBV, culture and GBV, community response to GBV, and underreporting of GBV), each containing numerous subthemes. This information will be used to develop culturally relevant GBV educational resources for adolescents and caregivers in Maunatlala.
