Development of a Field Arsenic Test Utilizing PEG Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles

  • Arsenic in its inorganic form is naturally present in groundwater. Continued exposure to arsenic contaminated water can result in long lasting health complications, ranging from cognitive development issues to cancer. One method which may be convertible to a field test is the use of PEG functionalized gold nanoparticles which aggregate in the presence of arsenic. The tests conducted showed that 60 nm gold nanoparticles functionalized with PEG-5 can detect concentrations of arsenic at concentrations as low as 0.75 ppb, which is far below the 10-ppb limit set by the WHO. The assay has repeatability arising from the nanoparticle purification process. Further experiments will investigate metal ion specificity, and the impact of PEG chain length and gold nanoparticle size on assay sensitivity.
