Abstract
  • Physical activity is associated with significant health benefits. These benefits include lower risk of cardiac disease, depression, and obesity. Physical activity in young children, 1-5 years old, is extremely important as children need to develop foundations of physical activity in order promote lower risk for diseases. A study with nine children was conducted to describe physical activity patterns of young children with and without disabilities, using the variables displacement and dispersion. Displacement is the distance traveled during a given time and dispersion is the distance of exploration from a point of central tendency. A GoPro camera captured the play space from an aerial perspective and documented the movement of the children. Displacement and dispersion patterns were highly variable among children, and no significant statistical differences were found between children with and without disabilities. Further research should include a larger sample size, more variation in the types of disabilities, and experiments to determine if a correlation between displacement and dispersion exists within this larger sample size. Key Words: physical activity, disability, toddlers, preschool, patterns, displacement, dispersion, GoPro
