Abstract
  • In the context of the obesity epidemic, the current study aimed to evaluate the health barriers individuals face towards living a healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, we sought to understand how individuals perceive they can overcome their health barriers, and how they believe healthcare professionals can help them overcome their health barriers. We utilized a survey that assessed demographics, current health status, health barriers, and proposed mitigation efforts. We observed a significant difference between socioeconomic status and total number of health barriers experienced. The COVID-19 pandemic was significantly more likely to be a health barrier for individuals of lower socioeconomic position. There was no significant difference between white and non-white individuals in terms of total number of health barriers. Qualitative data revealed that the primary health barriers of individuals were lack of time, lack of motivation, negative effects on mental health, and financial burdens. Moreover, individuals reported creating schedules and preparing meals as ways they can overcome their health barriers. Many did not believe that healthcare professionals could assist them in overcoming their health barriers; however, some people suggested greater access to affordable nutrition and exercise education and planning would be beneficial. Further implications, limitations, and directions for further research are discussed.
