Abstract
  • Student parents are a growing population within college and university campuses. Though their numbers continue to grow, there is no proportionate growth in resources from the universities that are available to them. Issues like this and others that student parents face due to their unique identity were amplified in the pandemic, but there is still little to no attention to the unique needs of student parents. This project aims to address this silence by documenting the oral histories of three student parents who have navigated both academic and parental responsibilities, among others, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using oral history interviewing, I collected, transcribed, and edited three oral histories and provided commentary connecting student parent narratives to themes in the existing literature on student parents and on remote learning during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Together, these histories underscore the ways the pandemic complicated the already tenuous positions of student parents who struggle to find safe, reliable, and affordable childcare even in non-pandemic times. Universities should pay closer attention to the needs of student-parents and work to increase access to practical tools for success.
