Abstract
  • This paper looks into the participants in Black Lives Matter-related communication on the social media app TikTok and the content they posted. Using grounded theory, the information gathered from Black Lives Matter TikTok videos was analyzed to determine the goals of the content creators, as well as the feasibility of community dialogue facilitation on this social media platform. Three types of communication events were located and analyzed to help determine these goals, in this case being to build and connect with community members or to engage in discussion with non-members. Using knowledge of community dialogue and of the TikTok app itself, it was then determined that, though the app could be an effective method of community building, it would be extremely difficult to facilitate community dialogue in such a setting.
