Abstract
  • When my mother’s mother sent her over to the new, western world, she sent her with a suitcase full of spices you couldn’t find at an American grocery store in the 90’s: tamarind and turmeric, coriander root and cumin. Ammu, my mother, had truly packed her entire life and everything she could make it into in a carry-on, and when she arrived on new land, it’s what brought her the most comfort. Copying down her mother’s family’s recipes onto scrap newspapers over the phone, making it for herself, and then her husband, and then her daughters, she found ease in the familiar. The immigrant’s suitcase connects her with her mother, with her mother tongue; it connects her daughters with herself. Comfort Food is about the connection between families within themselves, and connection between families and others. For me, the series is about my connection to my culture, and more importantly, my parents. This is an exploration of the immigrant experience in a white city. It’s an exploration of our connections to food and the comfort it can bring us in new, strange places. It’s an exploration of the way families have been able to create entire lives for themselves using the things that they are often othered for.
