Abstract
  • One method for CO2 sequestration is to store the liquid form of CO2 in small cement wells in the ground. An issue with this method is the susceptibility of cement to fracture and thus release the CO2. One proposition is to fill these cracks with biofilm of the bacteria Sporosarcina pasteurii (s.p.). The goal of this project is to optimize the feeding and growth of these biofilm colonies. We will model two components of this system: chemical reactions (between food nutrients and biofilm) and diffusion (of nutrients). In order to optimize this system we model it using differential equations and numerical methods. The differential equations describe the laws which govern the situation, while the numerical methods allow us to use these equations to simulate real world data.
