Abstract
  • Five solvents were used to resolubilize the fungal pigments of Chlorociboria aeruginosa and Scytalidium cuboideum, two common fungi used in the spalting of wood pieces. These solvents were tested as a replacement for dichloromethane in the pigment application process, via analysis of their ability to increase internal color coverage inside wood substrates. Ten of thirteen wood species showed significant results in the comparison of solvent application trials. Acetonitrile was found to produce the highest internal color coverage of the solvents tested. This study shows that acetonitrile is an effective choice for the application of pigments to wood, and offers new opportunities for possible industrial spalting applications.
