Abstract
  • Collaborative governance plays a significant role in forest management on public land in the Pacific Northwest. The method of governance offers the unique ability to engage a diverse range of stakeholders to reach consensus regarding forest management action. Evaluating the dynamics of the collaborative and its members is essential to understanding the conditions that lead to success within forest collaboratives. This study explores the question: “What role do values play in the language and communication methods that facilitate consensus in forest collaboratives?” A case study was performed on South Gifford Pinchot Collaborative by interviewing key stakeholders and participants on their perspectives on forest management and the collaborative process and used thematic analysis to identify values that were important to decision-making within the group. It was found that while a wide variety of values are present amongst collaborative members, the manner in which those values were realized and prioritized was differentiated between individuals. Additionally, similar positions were sometimes motivated by different values. Collaborative groups may benefit by providing opportunities to incorporate shared values to guide discussion, framing issues in terms of multiple values to expand support of positions, and using values to help build mutual understanding among participants.
