Abstract
  • Market sampling continues. Most samples have been aged. Several cruises were made during fiscal year 1969-70. The deep water survey for Dover sole yielded questionable results. Neither spawning concentrations nor concentrations of males were located. Calculations of year class strength for English sole showed that the 1961 year class was the strongest recorded since 1952. Aging studies on Dover sole continue, but a t a lesser rate. Burning of Dover sole otoliths shows promise of being a good substitute for scales, especially for older fish. Analysis of scales from tagged Dover sole confirms the fact that all fish do not lay down annuli every year.
