Abstract	This monograph is focused around the controversy in the economic literature regarding the effects of income changes on labor force participation. In particular, this controversy arises from the opposing hypotheses: the "additional worker" and the "discouraged worker." Each hypothesis predicts different behavior in response to falling income or rising unemployment. Empirical analyses have failed to terminate the controversy. This study attempts to clarify the issues involved through theoretical analysis and, in so doing, to provide additional theoretical restrictions that may be incorporated in the statistical testing problem.
