Abstract
  • A cellular proliferative disorder that superficially resembles mammalian leukemia has been found in several species of pelecypod mollusks from Yaquina Bay, Oreg. This paper reviews the history of the disease, its cytomorphological and histopathological characteristics, molluscan oncology, and cell renewal and describes current research on the neoplastic disease of bivalve mollusks. A disease with several serious implications and ramifications, the so-called neoplastic disease of Yaquina Bay bivalve mollusks (hereafter referred to as the neoplastic disease), has been found in several species of economically important shellfish in Yaquina Bay, Oreg. This paper describes a comparatively new and expanding area of study -- invertebrate oncology, or, to be more specific, molluscan oncology.
