Abstract
  • To determine if squirrels (Sciurus douglasii var.) cut cones before the seeds are ripe, a series of collection points was established in the Willamette Valley and the Cascade Mountains in the summer of 1954. The areas were inspected at intervals during August, Septem­ber and October of 1954, and freshly cut Douglas fir cones were gathered whenever they appeared. Cones were air dried and the seeds hand extracted and cleaned by hand. The data obtained from laboratory and greenhouse germination tests indicated that the squirrels cut cones in quantity only when the seeds were ripe, and that the seeds demonstrated no significant increase in viability with later dates of cutting.
