Abstract
  • The purpose of this report is to make the existence of the Oregon State College xylarium and this particular collection known to interested individuals and agencies in the United States and Canada. At the time of writing, the collection embraces 707 samples of 181 species representing 72 genera and 31 families. New, specimens are being added continually, and subsequent reports will be issued as substantial additions are made to the collection. The contemplated collection eventually should contain diversified samples for each species representative of their geographic range of distribution. At the same time it will attempt to recognize the inherent tendency of wood to exhibit varying characteristics as influenced by growing conditions and /or injury. The xylarium is housed in the Forestry Building on the Oregon State College campus, where this collection of samples is available for inspection.
