Abstract or Summary
  • The anchor-last mooring procedure is investigated in order to determine the transient forces in the mooring line and the velocities of the anchor. Transient forces were determined and the results showed that no severe snap loads occurred for the cases investigated. In addition, it was found that the vertical velocity of the anchor can be small as it approaches impact with the floor of the ocean. Both extensible (nylon and dacron) and inextensible (steel wire rope) lines were investigated. Lumped mass numerical models were developed for both cases. For the extensible line case the equations of motion were determined for each mass form Newton's Second Law, and they were integrated using a second order predictor-corrector integration technique. Hamiltonian techniques were utilized to determine the equations of motion for the inextensible line. The predictions for the numerical models show the line tensions and positions as a function of time.
