This report contains a summary and the results of the Artificial Annulus Operation Study instigated in 1961. This study was conducted to determine the most effective ways of manipulating the diet of hatchery juvenile salmon to produce permanent artificial “annulus” on the scales of fish. Abstract or Summary
  • In July and August 1961, nine lots of 500 juvenile silver salmon each were subjected to one-, two-, three- and four-week periods of complete starvation. The three- and four-week periods produced the best growth checks for that time of year, but were generally of inferior quality to those produced in 1962. Mortality was low and post-starvation growth recovery was rapid. In June and July 1962, six lots (each with a replication) of 410 juvenile silver salmon each, underwent one, two, and three weeks of complete starvation and two lots of 410 fish were subjected to three and six weeks of partial starvation. Two lots, each with a replication, were used as controls. The best growth checks that were developed during the 1961 or 1962 experiments occurred with the six week partially starved group. This group also gave the best information as to type of starvation and time of year to apply the treatments. From final samples the 91% check occurrence of the six0week partially starved lot was better than any other lot of experiment in either year. Mortality was low with all fish making rapid post-starvation gains in length and weight.
