Abstract
  • The introduction of an Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator in coal energy plants could potentially allow a 30% increase of efficiency by transforming energy within the channels where exhaust flows. The MHD generator increases efficiency by transforming kinetic energy from the exhaust into electricity by generating a Faraday and Hall current, which is then extracted by resistors. Analysis of the MHD simulation properties was conducted first to understand simplifications, which then were used in a bound and PDE-constrained numerical optimization to maximize the efficiency as a function of various parameters such as design of the channel, velocity, and pressure.
