Abstract
  • A system to reversibly extract Pb²⁺ ions from aqueous solutions using spiropyran functionalized nanofibers was proposed. Spiropyrans are photochromic compounds which undergo a conformational change that alters their physical properties and makes Pb²⁺ binding possible upon irradiation with UV light (365 nm). Irradiation with green light (525 nm) reverses this process and allows the spiropyrans to release the Pb²⁺ ions. An electrospinning apparatus was constructed and optimized to make PMMA nanofibers. The apparatus was capable of making smooth fibers of diameters 850 nm-1350 nm. A Pb²⁺ extraction apparatus was also constructed where aqueous Pb²⁺ was infused into a PDMS microfluidic chip packed with spiropyran functionalized nanofibers. The fibers were proven to be photochromic, but did not initiate Pb²⁺ extraction from solution. This is most likely due to degradation of surface bound spiropyrans by oxygen plasma in the chip binding process. This method may provide a useful way to create photochromic fibers for use in situations where changes in the surface chemistry of the fibers is not desired.
