Abstract
  • Key words: Physician, medicine, patients, doctor, healthcare, medical ethics
  • The physician-patient relationship is at the core of medical practice and the medical profession. Unfortunately, patients, medical students, and physicians alike have expressed concern about a diminishment of this relationship attributable in part to declining skills on the part of physicians in conducting physical exams, determining diagnoses, and effective communication. One way to address this concern in medical education is to consider the qualities and characteristics of an ideal physician. By reading about and contrasting the experiences of patients, medical students, and physicians, we can create a portrait of the ideal physician. The Mayo Clinic provides a great resource for looking into the minds of patients with a published article that compiled the 7 ideal physician behaviors based on interviews with a random sample of 192 patients. The Soul of a Doctor: Harvard Medical Students Face Life and Death, written by medical students, will provide great insight into what attributes medical students think are important to possess. Another book, Every Patient Tells a Story by Lisa Sanders, M.D., will provide us with the thoughts of a physician. Interviews with local physicians will also reveal another level of knowledge as to what physicians consider to be important characteristics of doctors. Key
