  • Land management techniques are numerous and well known, but knowledge of where and how to use these techniques is often inadequate. Silvicultural methods used by foresters in the Pacific Northwest exemplifies this quandary. Silviculture largely consists of applying standard techniques to various forest stands. Classical silvicultural techniques are not universally applicable. They should be selected and modified to fit the environment of each Individual forest stand. Environments are not easily identified. Many interacting factors combine to produce an environment. Measuring all of these directly is impractical, even in a simple environment. Don Minore (5) developed a forest environment classification procedure. His classification was based on the measurement or estimation of four environmental factors basic to plant growth: moisture, temperature, solar radiation, and soil type. Once an environmental classification scheme has been developed for a specific area, silvicultural prescriptions for each environment can be established by classifying environments before silvicultural treatment and recording success or failure of the treatment. This information can then be applied to all areas of the same environmental class in the study area. This report shows the results of applying Minore's classification scheme to the establishment of regeneration (success or failure) and the silvicultural treatment of clearcutting in the South Umpqua Basin. This study was conducted under an agreement between the Bureau of Land Management (ELM) and the Pacific Northwest Forest and Range Experiment Station (PNW). The Program Charter dated April 21, 1972, called for two approaches to the problem. This report covers the second approach, "Development of Silvicultural Guidelines for Establishing Forest Regeneration in Southwestern Oregon." The first approach "Current Status of Regeneration" will be reported separately by another researcher.
