Abstract
  • The ionotropic glutamate receptors are ligand-gated ion channels that mediate the majority of excitatory neurotransmission in the brain. The three classes of ionotropic glutamate receptors are alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA), N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), and kainite. These three classes have unique subunits. NMDA receptors play important roles in development, forms of synaptic plasticity, which is involved in higher order processes such as learning and memory. NMDA and AMPA receptors associate with lipid rafts. Lipid rafts are cholesterol rich membrane microdomains important for protein sorting, signal transduction, and endocytosis. Myosin II co-fractionates with NMDA receptors in the lipid raft fractions.
