Abstract
  • There are few modern isotopic ages of igneous rocks and polymetallic (Pb-Zn-Ag-Cu-Au) hydrothermal mineral veins of the Mt. Thompson quadrangle in southwestern Montana. Lithology ages of this region vary from approximately 85-80 Ma Butte granite(Kbg) (Lund et al. 2002) to 48.6 Ma of Lowland Creek Volcanic Field (LCVF) (Dudas et al. 2010). While remapping the 1962 Brecraft map (1:100,000 scale) to a 7.5-minute quadrangle (1:24,000 scale) map we collected a suite of samples for geochemical testing and Argon40 – Argon39 geochronology, samples were selected based upon prominence of depositional formation and location. Four samples were selected for Ar-Ar geochronology NHO-16-05 a LCVF tuff, NHO-16-010 a diatreme vent sample from the Montana Tunnels mine, NHO-16-075 a volcanic dike, and NHO-16-081 a quartz latite dike that cut’s the volcanic diatreme. Target phases include biotite from NHO-16-05, NHO-16-075, NHO-16-081, and sericite from NHO-16-010. Geochronological analysis of the above four sampled yielded ages ranging from 53.33 ± 0.15 Ma to 51.89 ± 0.07 Ma. The results from the 40Ar/39Ar provide parameters for formation and deposition of volcanic and hydrothermally altered polymetallic dikes.
