Abstract
  • Second of a planned series of mill studies to test the adequacy of a log grading system for species associated with ponderosa pine, the study reported was made with the cooperation of Stilwell-Pengilley Lumber Company, under the direction of a committee representing participating agencies, namely: Bureau of Indian Affairs Bureau of Land Management Forest Products Research Center Pacific Northwest Forest and Range Experiment Station United States Forest Service, Region 6 Western Pine Association Results reported herein should be examined together with results of other studies in the planned series, notably those reported in FPRC Bulletin 6, December 1957, made on logs from the same general area of northeastern Oregon. The two studies in northeastern Oregon were reported separately; first, to emphasize that each is an individual study of a planned series, and, second, to preserve differences in findings. Although each of the first two studies was comprehensive for the study logs available, area represented by the log sample and number of logs in many grade-size classifications was limited. Furthermore, applicability of results to timber in other parts of the Ponderosa Pine Region has not been determined. Results, therefore, should be applied only locally, and with caution, until additional recovery data are available.
