Abstract
  • Gujarat, a major maritime state has been bestowed with both inland and marine fishery resources. It has 20 percent coastline. 10 per cent of EEZ, in marine fishery and 82 river system, 2.87 lakh hectare of reservoirs, 0.71 lakh hectare of pond and tanks and 3.76 lakh hectare of brackish water in inland fishery. These vast resources are indicative of huge potential of fish production in the state. The state government has crucial role in development and conservation of fishery resources by initiating legislative framework and administrative support in monitoring and supervision of fishery resources. These policies will have greater impact on the ground if the fisherman community had been taken into consultation while formulating such policies. On the contrary the study had highlighted the shortcomings of the legislative framework of the state, administrative failure to consultative process with primary stake holders which has led to not realizing the fishery potential of the state besides encouraging undesirable practice highlighted by the UNCLOS. Based on primary and secondary data this study will highlight government failure to accelerate fish production despite huge potential. Based on study, it will also include the suggestions for sustainable development of fishery for developing countries.
