Abstract
  • This thesis presents an economic comparison of three different highway networks which serve an area of 64 miles by 83 miles in size. Each network is designed to carry the same traffic between any two towns but is different in total length. Costs of right of way, excavation, pavement and maintenance are estimated from unit costs and length of each highway network. Costs of bridges are estimated by using the unit costs per square foot of bridge and approximated size and number of bridges. To calculate road user costs, unit costs per vehicle-mile are obtained from given references and vehicle-miles are calculated in she following way: The generated trips in each town are estimated from the number of vehicles and are distributed to other towns by a gravity model. The number of trips are multiplied by the distances travelled to obtain vehicle-miles. Comparisons are made by annual-cost method, present-worth method, rate-of-return method and benefit-cost ratio method for different interest rates. It is found that the network which has the longest highway length, but is the most convenient, is the most economical one.
